The Alchemist: A Mirror of Life

Have we ever asked ourselves why some people pursue their dreams while others, despite having great ambitions, remain where they are?

I found the answer to this question in the book The Alchemist.

For me, *The Alchemist* is not just the story of a young man searching for treasure; it is the story of every person who has a dream in life but finds fear of failure, doubt, and difficulties standing between that dream and achieving it.

The main character of the story, Santiago, is a young man who loves traveling. He chooses to become a shepherd and travels with his flock of sheep. One day, he arrives at a church and rests beneath a fig tree. He dreams that a treasure is hidden beneath the Egyptian pyramids. He could have ignored the dream and continued his ordinary life, but he decides to take a step and search for the treasure. That decision becomes the beginning of a great journey for him. The first lesson we should learn from this book is that having a dream is not enough; we must take steps toward achieving it.

Sometimes we say, “I wish I had done this, I wish I had learned that skill, I wish I had achieved that goal.” But between wishing and achieving, there is something important: action. If we only wish and never take a step, our dreams will not become reality.

The second lesson of the book is not being afraid to start. We should not be afraid of beginning something new. Santiago faces many difficulties along his journey. Sometimes he loses things. Sometimes he does not know what his next step will be. But each time, he learns something new. This part of the story shows that failure does not always mean the end. Sometimes failure is a strict teacher that teaches us many things we would never learn under ordinary circumstances.

Another lesson from the book is to be patient along the journey. We usually want to see results quickly. If we work toward something and do not see results after some time, we may think that we have chosen the wrong path. But life does not always work that way. Some goals take time. Just as a seed cannot become a tree in one day, a person cannot become what they dream of becoming in a single day.

One of the beautiful concepts in the book is what is described as the “language of the world.” I understood this as meaning that life does not always speak to us through words. Sometimes it teaches us through experiences, events, the people who enter our lives, and the opportunities that appear before us.

But this does not mean that we should consider every random event a sign. Rather, we should live with awareness and learn from our experiences.

Another interesting theme is the relationship between a person and their goals and path in life. Sometimes we become so focused on reaching our destination that we forget what we are learning along the way. Santiago travels a long and difficult road and eventually reaches the Egyptian pyramids. He begins digging there, but two thieves stop him. Santiago tells them his story. One of the thieves says, “I also had a dream that a treasure was hidden in a church in Spain beneath a fig tree. But it was only a dream. These things are not real. It is just a waste of time.”

Santiago realizes what the thief is talking about. The thief is describing the very place where Santiago’s own story began.

Throughout his journey, Santiago not only finds the treasure he saw in his dream, but he also changes as a person. He gains experience, meets different people, and understands himself better.

So perhaps the real treasure is not something we find at the end of the journey; perhaps it is the person we become along the way.

On the other hand, we should not stop growing because we are afraid of losing what we have. Sometimes a person finds themselves between a safe life and the life they truly want. The choice is not always easy. But if we never take a step toward our dreams, years later we may regret not trying more than we regret failing.

After finishing the book, I closed it and looked at my own life through the perspective of the story. I asked myself: What signs have appeared in my life that I may not have noticed?

When I looked back at my past, I realized that events, people, opportunities, and even some difficulties had brought me to where I am today. I asked myself whether I am on the right path in my life, and my answer was yes.

I realized that perhaps I did not understand the meaning of some events at the time, but later I came to understand them. This book teaches us that we should not remain in our safe place because of fear. We may fail, but we can always rise again. Life is not only about reaching a destination; it is also about learning, growing, and discovering ourselves along the way.

So, if we have a dream, we should not wait for the perfect time. We should take the first step.

Remember to always listen to the voice of your heart, because wherever your heart is, that is where your treasure will be. When you truly desire something from the depths of your heart, the universe conspires to help you achieve it.
